My name is John Ruiz, I was born in Oakland, California.
I've been in love with guitars since I first played one at the age
of eight. Along the way I've had the privilege to play with with many great musicians, record and travel across the country. In the early 1970's I worked for the Selmer Conn instrument company in Elkhart, Indiana when they rolled out the Conn line of acoustic and electric guitars. Putting my own experience to work there, I learned the foundations of guitar construction, setup and care through their over seas consultants and by working on 100's of acoustic and electric guitars.
I currently play and work in northern California. I have continued to play, learn and work on instruments over the years since and would look forward to the opportunity to work on yours. My philosophy of repair is to minimize intrusion and change to an instrument - "primum non nocere" - first, do no harm. Respect for the original specifications of the builder comes first while performing a repair or restore. Understanding the needs and requirements of my clients is essential. I provide photographic documentation of the work done so that the owner can see the extent of the work and knows what to expect. My rates are reasonable. *
Many less expensive entry level guitars play badly and are discouraging for the first time or occasional player. An area I really enjoy is taking an entry level instrument that has problems (high action, neck issues, fretting, intonation issues, etc.) and bring it to a playable condition for the owner. If you have one like this, I'll be happy to give you a best-case, economic solution.
* "The fine print: rates are negotiable - parts, availability, time table and other components specific to your project may affect final pricing." Call me, let's talk about your project.
